Ascension Catholic Church

Minneapolis, Minnesota

Since 1890, Ascension Catholic Church has been an important community gathering place and center of worship for the people of Minneapolis. Over the years, the church campus expanded to accommodate one of the largest parishes in the city and alterations were made to the original church building. In 2014, parish leaders approached Conrad Schmitt Studios Inc. for assistance in restoring and revitalizing the aged interior.

Working closely with the church’s building committee, the Conrad Schmitt Studios design team produced a digital rendering of a proposed new interior decoration. After review and approval, a CSS crew of artists and craftsmen completed a full-scale onsite sample of the proposed design, refining colors and finish levels for the final decoration. With planning and fundraising complete, the crew executed the full decorative scheme, enhancing the elegant architecture of the historic building.

The project scope included plaster repair and new paint at walls and ceilings throughout the nave and apse. A new atmospheric mural behind the high altar brings the eye to the front of the church, focusing attention on the most important aspect of the liturgy and uplifting the spirit. Statuary, Stations of the Cross, and the ornate High and Side Altars were also revitalized as part of the project. Polychrome stencils, gilded accents, and painted ceiling medallions complete the decorative scheme.
