Challenge

The contemporary design of La Porte Hospital’s chapel in La Porte, Indiana, included a dramatic opening for a large stained glass window.

Because the chapel would be used by people of all faiths, the La Porte Hospital Foundation requested a window that depicted a universal theme – the “Family Tree.”

Solution

After considering the foundation’s requirements, Conrad Schmitt Studios’ artists developed a contemporary representation of a family tree.

The image transcends all faiths. The tree symbolically provides shelter from the heat and cold, roots for comfort and security and far-reaching branches for support. The message parallels the role the hospital fulfills within the community. The use of iridescent glass and gilded exterior lead lines further strengthens the design.
