Mayo Clinic

Rochester, MN

Depicting the biblical story of Job that is found in the Old Testament, Renewal of Life is a mosaic that greets staff, patients, and their loved ones who enter Mayo Clinic Hospital’s Methodist Campus in Rochester, Minnesota. It was created using glass and marble from the same quarry in Italy where Michelangelo obtained material for his sculptures. Job’s inspiring story is one of suffering, a test of faith, and ultimately one of perseverance. It is fitting for this reason that this beautiful work of art that covers an entire wall is now displayed for all to see, although that was not always the case.

Due to the construction of the hospital’s pharmacy, the mosaic was covered with a protective wall that blocked its visible presence for a decade. Volunteers at the clinic wanted to change this. As the original designers of the mosaic, Conrad Schmitt Studios, Inc. offered their services, and in 2016 the mosaic was uncovered, restored, and reunited with the other works of art that can be seen at Mayo Clinic.
