St. Mary’s Catholic Church

Burlington, Wisconsin

Built in 1891, St. Mary’s worship space has gone through several significant decorative renovations, the last taking place after a devastating fire in 1977, when simple and less decorative worship spaces were the norm of post Vatican II. However, during most of our history, the church featured two beautiful murals above each side shrine.

With a goal to recreate some of the artistry of their forefathers, the church commissioned Conrad Schmitt Studios to restore the worship space. Two new dynamic murals we painted, inspired by the orginal murals of The Annunciation and The Death of St. Joseph. Each mural is framed with stencil also harkening back to an earlier historic stencil. The Sanctuary and side aisle ceilings are painted a heavenly blue, chosen for it’s symbolic meaning and providing a serene atmosphere. Gold leaf borders accent the neo-Gothic architecture. Rays of light radiate from the Sanctuary ceiling, depicted in gold leaf, signifying the presence of God.

An added detail completed by our team is the faux wood painting on the stained glass window frames. Our artist meticulously hand-painted the wood grain using traditional brush techniques, achieving the warmth and craftsmanship of real wood while allowing the parish to avoid the cost of new wood framing.
