St. Michael Catholic Church

Stillwater, Minnesota

Completed in 1875, The Church of St. Michael stands as one of Minnesota’s oldest parishes and a lasting testament to Stillwater’s heritage as a thriving lumber mill city. Constructed during the height of the region’s lumber era, the church’s soaring wooden columns and exposed beams reflect both the materials and craftsmanship that defined the community which built it. These architectural elements remain central to the identity and character of the space today.

Conrad Schmitt Studios, Inc. was entrusted with developing and executing new liturgical decoration that honors this rich history while enhancing the sacred environment for contemporary worship. Our approach focused on complementing, not competing with, the church’s original architectural framework. Thoughtful paint treatments and carefully designed stencils were introduced to highlight the verticality and rhythm of the wooden structure, reinforcing the warmth and strength inherent in the historic interior.

Intricate stencil patterns were introduced along the ceiling plane, creating a sense of movement that draws the eye upward. Within the transepts, decorative treatments were thoughtfully designed to frame and accentuate the statues, reinforcing their presence while remaining harmonious with the surrounding architecture.

In the sanctuary, the inscription Gloria in excelsis Deo, Latin for “Glory to God in the highest,” was incorporated as a focal element, accompanied by complementary stencils in the apse.

Overhead, a luminous blue ceiling, evoking the heavenly sky, crowns the interior. Its celestial tone serves as a subtle yet powerful reminder of the sacred purpose of the space, reinforcing the upward movement and spiritual resonance of the design.
